A self-help project championed by a local non -governmental organisation (NGO) is empowering rural communities by weaning them off the dependency syndrome in Umguza District.
Hope for a Child in Christ (HOCIC) drilled six boreholes and helped create three gardens in Umguza’s wards 12, 17 and 19 to assist people get an income.

It started providing poultry and agriculture equipment in January this year. The communities also benefited from chicken runs and were also given 400 batches of broilers for them to commence the programme.
As a result, they are now able to send their children to school.
HOCIC is undertaking the programme in three districts, Umguza, Matobo and Bulawayo Metropolitan Province through funding from the Latter-Day Saint Charities, a humanitarian arm of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints.
Speaking during the handover-takeover ceremony of the projects in Maboleni Village in Umguza’s ward 19, Matabeleland North Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister, Richard Moyo, commended the organisation for initiating the programme.
He said the projects have breathed life to communities through the eradication of the dependence syndrome.
“These are the Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) that we commend, organisations that are empowering people to source their own money so that they can live with their families. This has empowered them for life and it will lead to individual projects. Other NGOs should also take a leaf from HOCIC because the organisation is not only giving food but it has also given people lives,” he said.
Minister Moyo said the development was in line with aspirations of the Second Republic under the leadership of President Mnangagwa which aspires to improve the livelihoods of ordinary citizens by empowering them to become self-reliant, thereby contributing to economic growth in the country.
He encouraged community members to keep on working hard on the projects as they have been empowered.
“This will bring about the development of individual projects and therefore many are going to learn as they continue practicing farming either at their homes or in these projects that have been started. This is a newly resettled community and there is a shortage of water. The Government will drill more boreholes so as to curb water problems,” said Minister Moyo.
He said, it is such projects that complement Government efforts that will lead to the creation of self-sufficiency and food security.
HOCIC director, Mrs Sunga Mzeche said the organisation’s main objectives are to improve food security and nutritional status of communities through the establishment of nutrition gardens.
“We want to improve nutritional status in the communities at Umguza, Bulawayo and Matopo. Also, drilling of boreholes will help stimulate less labour for the community. It will ensure drinking of clean water,” she said.
Ward 19 councillor, Gertrude Gumbo said the project is providing money and food for communities.
“We have now started selling these vegetables and our customers are from Tsholotsho. We are now getting money and food. We really appreciate the efforts of the HOCIC,” she said.
As a result, they are now able to send their children to school.
